The Sand aka Killer Beach (2015)

This one looks to be a remake of one of my favorite b-movies from the 80s, Blood Beach, with John Saxon and Marianna Hill. However, it is not. It is based on the exact same idea- some sort of creature or monster that lives beneath the sand, and swallows up unsuspecting beachgoers leaving not a trace of them.

One of the reasons Blood Beach is so good is that it takes itself very seriously, like a Jaws thing. I can’t imagine a movie based on the same idea in this day and age coming across as a serious monster movie. I’d assume it would be a comedy. But, fingers crossed that this one at least tries to be scary.

The morning after a spring break rager on the beach, we have a bunch of hung over college kids, waking up in their cars, in the little lifeguard towers, in trashcans, etc. Straight away we have a couple of them swallowed up by the beach, and the rest of them are freaking out, not knowing what to do. Their phones are inaccessible and the car’s battery is dead.

They calm down a little bit and get their heads on straight, and try to find some way out of this. The movie is super silly. It’s essentially a version of the child’s game hot lava, except in this version, if you lose, you die in a crumpled up little ball of blood and pus and sand.

And ya, it’s too much of an absurd premise to not go into comedy, although they don’t really do anything to push it that direction. It’s just the nature of the story.

CGI is unimpressive, but not the worst. In the end, it’s just a brainless, silly, b-movie. If you’re expecting anything else, you’re gonna be disappointed. But if you know that going in, maybe you won’t feel like you wasted an hour and 20 minutes. Definitely rated R for gore and some nudity.
