Spellbinder (1988)

How have I not heard of this one? I’m such a sucker for Satanism movies, I’m always seeking them out, how did it slip under my radar for all these years? Oh well, better late than never.

And maybe it’s just that I’ve seen I dunno how many hundreds of these movies, but I could spot right away that the first scene was a setup.

Los Angeles. A handsome, yuppie type guy, lawyer, starts up a romantic relationship with a super hot woman who he just met. Nothing wrong with that. Well, except that she’s promised her soul to some Satanic cult, who thinks she’s trying to escape the cult with this guy, and who will stop at nothing to bring her back into the fold.

It’s kinda slow moving, slow to develop, but finally at about an hour in, we get to the meat of it. Something about a meeting of the cult elders on the night of winter solstice, and this woman is supposed to be there. But, if she’s able to elude the clutches of these Satanists until after that meeting, then she’s free of them forever and she can go on to live her life.

But these Satanists are powerful, tricky, and ruthless. They won’t hesitate to kill anybody who tries to stand in their way.

The whole last part is a race against time thing. But then, oooo, plot twist. But in the end, it doesn’t pack much of a punch. Not enough nudity, body count is shamefully low, the Satanists don’t flex their Satanic muscles nearly enough. It’s basically a rated PG-13 flick with a few moments of rated R-ness. It’s not a bad movie I guess, but I expect something a whole lot heavier from Satanists.
