Ghost Town: An American Terror (2023)

Period piece ghost story. Desert southwest, Arizona, looks to be sometime in the late 1800s. Horse and wagon days, oil lanterns, chamber pots, etc.

A young man is walking through the desert, desperate for food and water, probably been walking for days, when he happens upon a small, dusty town. His chances of dying of heat exhaustion just decreased by a lot.

He doesn’t have a penny to his name, but word on the street is that the saloon in town would be his best bet to get a job, so he goes and checks it out. The saloon owner doesn’t seem all that welcoming, but he hires him as a bartender. He has a bit of a rough first day, as his first customer in fact is shot dead right in front of him just as he poured his first whiskey.

And it seems that none of the townspeople are all that welcoming of him.

He settles in a little bit, gets to know some of the town folk. But something seems a little bit off about this whole place, and about the people.

Some stuff happens, the trials and tribulations of life in the wild wild west. The man cracks under the pressure and gets in to some deep trouble. And then it snowballs. And then he goes crazy. Or wait, maybe it’s everyone else who is crazy.

And what was that whole ending bit about? I mean, I liked how it was weird, but none of it made any sense. Another movie where maybe it made sense in the script, but once it hit the screen, they just didn’t give us enough info to put any of the pieces together. And was that a Wendigo? What did that have to do with anything?

It’s a decent attempt at a ghost story, but it all falls apart. Not recommended.
